Mountain bikers in rocky desert terrain
Not actually Sands Sports Park (we were a bit busy with a grazed knee and some tears), but this gives you a good feel for the gravelly terrain and vibe. Bring the proper gear — and maybe a plaster or two.

You know those family outings where halfway through, you’re muttering whose idea was this anyway? That was us at Sands Sports Park South Gate — Riyadh’s newest adventure spot, tucked just out by the airport.

To be fair, it was fun. Just with a few gravel-related bruises along the way.

What is Sands Sports Park?

Part of the sprawling new Sports Boulevard development, Sands Sports Park is a breath of fresh (if occasionally dusty) air for anyone craving outdoor action in Riyadh. It’s split into two sections:

  • South Gate – mountain biking trails

  • North Gate – road cycling tracks

We tackled the South Gate, which is less “gentle family ride” and more “mini Red Bull Rampage.” Expect rocky paths, steep inclines, and a few moments where you question your life choices.

Is Sands Sports Park South Gate Suitable for Kids?

Sort of. But here’s the nuance.

Yes, there were parents with small kids wobbling along on starter bikes. And yes, some of the trails are flatter. But make no mistake — parts of it are tough. If your child’s only ever biked round a smooth compound road, this might be a bit of a shock to the system (and the shins... and elbows... and knees... and confidence).

You’ll need:

  • A proper mountain bike (with decent suspension)

  • Protective kit: helmet, gloves, elbow and knee pads

  • A good sense of humour

We learnt the hard way that loose gravel plus no padding equals a fast-track education in first aid. Always learning.

What to Bring

Here’s what we wish we’d packed (and a few things we thankfully did):

  • Mountain bikes for everyone – We had a bit of a mishmash: one proper mountain bike and a couple of skinny-tyred road bikes that were totally out of their depth. Not ideal.

  • Helmets, gloves, elbow and knee pads – We all had helmets (tick), but that was about it. Spoiler: gravel does not care about your optimism.

  • Water bottles – Thankfully, we brought these. There are taps dotted around, but this is the desert.

  • Snacks – To keep energy (and spirits) up. A few sweets in your pocket can do wonders when morale dips.

  • Small first aid kit – We didn’t have one, and immediately regretted it.

  • Sunscreen and/or reflective gear – Depending on the time of day. Evenings are cooler but still dry, and the lighting is decent.

Bonus Shout-Out

I’ve got to say, the Sports Boulevard staff were brilliant. One guy zipped over on a scooter when we had a tumble — armed with a bottle of water and the world’s smallest plaster. It wasn’t quite a trauma kit, but it was something.

Another kind guard (with perfect comic timing) asked why we’d come out here without the proper equipment. Fair question. Lesson learnt.

When to Go

Evenings are brilliant. It’s cooler, less crowded, and the trails are floodlit. You’ll spot local mountain biking clubs whizzing around, which adds a nice buzz (and a helpful reminder that these trails are no joke).

The atmosphere’s a fun mix of sporty teens, Lycra-loving adults, and a few cautious parents wondering how they got roped into this.

People Also Ask

Is South Gate suitable for beginners?

Some sections, yes. Stick to the gentler loops if you're new or nervous. Don’t push it without the right gear or support.

Are there bike rentals available?

Not at the moment. You’ll need to BYOB (bring your own bike). You could try local cycling clubs for rental leads.

Can you bring a picnic?

You can, though this isn’t really a picnic park — more pit-stop energy bar territory. There are rest areas, but it’s geared for movement, not meandering. There was an area which Im sure will have a cafe soon.

Final Thoughts

Sands Sports Park South Gate is an adventurous new gem for Riyadh. It’s a brilliant way to burn off some family energy, provided you come prepped — and padded. Expect thrills, possibly spills, and plenty of laughs (in hindsight).

Next time, we might try the North Gate. Road cycling sounds blissfully tame in comparison — and my knees would like a quieter weekend.
